The Golfing World erupted with a triumphant cheer when late last year the IOC (International Olympic Committee) voted to include golf in the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since then, work has been underway transforming the low-lying wetlands around the city into a world-class course.

Hanse Golf Course Design won out of 8 finalists as the candidate to most closely meet the vision and criteria put forth by the IOC. One of the more interesting requirements was to maintain the natural contours of the land, while still making the course as challenging as possible.

Hanse Golf Course Design boasts a portfolio of acclaimed courses around the world both praised by professionals and amateurs alike. The new Rio course, once finished, will make history – literally, by being the first Olympic sanctioned golf course in over a century. The course will also be utilized for decades into the future as not only a potential destination for future professional tournaments, but as a communal resource for millions living in and around Rio de Janeiro.

With Hanse’s eye for design and Rio’s rugged coastline, the Rio course will show how much Brazil has to offer the world. This where an old-world sport meets the shores of the new world. We can’t wait.
